The Pantanal |
the Pantanal is the world's largest wetland area and is situated in South America, mostly within the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. the Pantanal of South America is one of the most biologically rich environments on the planet. It is often referred as the world's largest freshwater wetland system. It stretches for a vast area from central-western Brazil, eastern Bolivia and eastern Paraguay. With its extra ordinary concentration and diverse flora and fauna and a landscape spanning a variety of ecological sub-regions, the Pantanal stands out as one of the world's great natural wonder.
| This area is an ecological paradise with unparalleled wildlife sanctuary of spectacular beauty and contains hundreds species of birds, butterflies and myriads of brightly colored flowers and shoals of fish. Capuchin and Howler monkeys, capybaras, toucans, anacondas, caimans and tapirs help to create an aquatic and sylvan theater of sights and sounds. The endangered jaguar and increasingly rare hyacinthine macaws and giant river otters-all have their home in the Pantanal. |
Despite the region's beauty and remarkable environmental and economic values. the Pantanal remains relatively unknown to the world and faces an uncertain future stemming from myriads of socio-economic pressure. It is not a real swamp but it's a flood plain. Every year during the wet season from November to April for up to 2 or 3 months the whole area gets inundated by the complex river system.
The annual rainfall in this area is between 1,000 - 1,400 millimeters. But the slope of the Pantanal is very slight. The region is well noted for its extraordinary bio diversity and abundance of wildlife and is known as "the world's biggest ecological sanctuary". South America is the fourth largest continent of the world and is mostly situated in the Southern hemisphere. This is a continent of great geographical diversity.
